What is the difference between a transfer student and an exchange student?

September 21st, 2009 | by |

From what I understand, a transfer student is a student from another university who intends to finish the degree at the latter university. Whereas an exchange student is just a student who intends on finishing the degree at the former uni. Does this really make a difference?

A transfer student is permanently moving from one university to the other and will get his/her degree at the new university.

An exchange student is one who comes to a university (or high school) from another country. If a high school student, they will take a semester or year and return home. If a college student, they may take a semester, year or full degree program. If they do not take a full degree program, they will return home to their own university.

Er, yes, a transfer student’s degree is awarded by the university they transfer to. An exchange student’s is awarded by the university they’re actually "at" with no mention of the time spent at the other university.
