I'm starting student teaching tomorrow. I'm a little stressed and I want to find a way to introduce myself to the students in away that is nice and serious. Any ideas?
I'm teaching grades 6-8 / English Language

It depends. What grade will you be teaching? *The most important thing is to establish your authority right away.* That DOES NOT BE "I’m mean, and I’m in charge." But let them know they should treat you with the same respect as they do their teacher. I have seen WAY too many student teachers lose control of the kids and it affects their relationship with the cooperating teacher. That is true no matter what grade you teach. i can give you some suggestions if you tell me the age group you will be working with/subject areas.

From my experience your associate teacher will introduce you to the class. I don’t know how your practicum is structured, but I just finished my first in December and at my school we have a 5 week practicum where the first week is 100% observation, the second week is 25% teaching, the third week is 50% teaching and so on until the fifth week were we teach the whole day. I liked the observation period beacuse it gave me a chance to become acclamated to the classroom and gave the children a chance to get used to me. I was in a 3/4 split. My associate teacher just introdued me as "This is Mr. N and he’s going to be with us until Christmas". In that week I just walked around during independent work, helped students out, showed them that I could be used as a resource to ask questions just as their teacher could, and developed that sort of relationship with them. I don’t know how similar your experience will be but maybe you can take something from mine.

Good luck! It’s normal to be a little anxious, but I’m sure you’ll do fine! The fact that you’re actually coming here and trying to do a bit of research shows that you want to do well, which is really all anyone can expect of you at this point.
